From an 1833 Township Seat to a Rebuilt 1930s Village
DeWitt was settled in 1833 by Captain David Scott and served as the Clinton County seat from the county's 1831 creation until 1857. It didn't formally incorporate as a village until 1929, and a fire the very next year destroyed eight buildings downtown, so a real portion of DeWitt's older-looking core actually dates to the early-1930s rebuilding rather than the original township era.
