Haslett's earliest buildings date to an 1887 lakeside resort built by James H. Haslett on the shore of what was then Pine Lake -- renamed Lake Lansing in 1927 -- and many started life as seasonal cottages for the resort's thousands of summer visitors rather than year-round houses. The community itself took the Haslett name by 1895 as the resort era gave way to permanent residential growth.
